Located between the Shiretoko Peninsula and the Nemuro Peninsula, the Notsuke Peninsula stretches out like an arm into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the largest sand spit in Japan, with a total length of approximately 26 km. A sand spit is a landform created by sand carried by ocean currents and deposited over many years. The intricate coastline created by the erosion of ocean currents is one of the reasons why the Notsuke Peninsula has nurtured a diversity of life.
